THE RED LION INN

PEACE & TRANQUILITY

The Red Lion Inn, Main Street, Stockbridge, Mass.

The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Massachusetts is heaven on earth.  A delightful two hour ride from Hamden, Connecticut up Route 8 to Route 44 to Route 7 brings you from your busy schedule to Brigadoon in the Berkshires.  Main Street never got better.

A 1775 Inn with hundreds of beds and you only need one.  The lobby is a life unto itself.  The front porch dances with life and stories that makes People Watching a delight.  The Lions' Den Pub and Restaurant in the lower section of the buidling adds character and characters to the charm and character of this mesmerizing oasis in this mesmerizing part of our world.  If you want more formal dining, you can  find that too in the main dining room.

Lobby Awaits You

Busy?  Stressed?  Need a little rest and relaxation? Trust me, you'll find it and more just over the Connecticut Litchfield Border near Butternut Ski Resort and Great Barrington antiques.  You want to shop--Lennox is a ten minute ride away.  Golf?  Try the Stockbridge CC or Cornwall CC.  Want to ski--too many places to name.  Tanglewood Music in the summer, Chesterwood Sculpture Tours, Norman Rockwell Museum...or, simply spend the evening in the lobby with a cool drink and listen to the soothing piano while the crackling fire makes you feel warm all over.

Columbus Day Weekend will find the place humming with Leaf Chasers galore.  Every season offers something unique at this special place on earth.

                             Fire Place for Peace

                                 Entryway to Heaven

                           Tavern for  Informal Dining

You want excitement on your getaway?  At this time of the year at The Red Lion Inn my kind of excitement is sitting in the lobby and watching the flames dance across the fireplace.  Evening brings a beer or grand manier and friendly chatter with friends you just met.  Morning brings coffee and the early risers off to ski.

You get to meet the likes of Julia and Stefanos---a five year old bundle of joy in Julia with a personality detined to make her a queen.  Her severn year old brother on his way to being a Navy Seal--or so it seems at this time in his life.  Mom has come alone from the urban Manhattan skyline to sneak away with the kids and tackle the slopes while dad stays at home to tackle the sky scrapers.  He knows not what he missed.

Fireplace magic brings worlds together from one side of the couch to the other.  A family from Quincy tells a story of being on the Antique Road Show while a friendly couple  from Cambridge joins the crew sharing their couch with the ever loving, ever present Simon the cat.  The Connecticut Boy in the middle enjoys the pleasant conversation as the flames dance a new dance for all to see.  And then it happens.  The Red Lion Inn Magic strikes again.

The two women--both in the second half century of their lives--suddenly realize they were in high school together just two years apart.  The flames dance more closely together as the ambience of the room adds more peace to all at the reuniting of friends from long ago.  It is like  the gentle and loving conversation the Inn owners--Jack and Jane Fitzpatrick-- had earlier that evening recounting their high school courtship to their student intern  from Australia.  A courtship that has lasted over five decades as these two classy people ready themselves for an evening dinner with family.

While Simon followed me to our room on the second floor, I climbed into the bed for a deep, sound sleep.  The pool and hot tub out our window were nice but I cried out for the roadside quiet of the roaring trucks coming up Route 7.  There is a peacefulness within the walls of The Red Lion Inn--and its other houses and rooms not connected to the Main Inn--that work  like hypnosis.  The louder the sound the deeper the sleep.  It is a sleep like no other.  Stress departs as if a wave of relief has covered your body and your mind throughout your entire stay.

Why even the morning of departure you are met with the friendliness of Stefan at the front podium.  Greeting the morning crowd for breakfast or entertaining the young children with magic tricks.  One trick after another until he fends off the youngsters with denying them their morning candy consisting of disappearing coins and objects being pulled from their ears.  The laughter is momentary.  The delight enduring.

But alas, as with Brigadoon, while one wants to linger and stay, the real world once again beckons.  And so, with a nod towards the fireplace one glides out the back lobby to descend on the trip homeward.  It's always good to get home.  It's also nice to know that The Red Lion Inn is only a short way away.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!!

               YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!

                                    “Yes We Can”

                        By ecb jr. Copyright 11.6.08

Drops of rain upon my head,

One step forward, too many dead.

Left foot, right foot, mud all around,

Too many left behind, too many bound.

Little steps taken, marching all the time,

Songs in the field, all day—rain or shine.

Strides in leather, leather on our backs,

At times it didn’t seem to pay to be just black.

Then came the sunshine, took away the rain,

Martin climbed the mountain,

Brought peace and hope from pain.

Now Barack’s upon us,

New heights have been attained,

All I see is sunshine,

The rain has washed away the pain.

Change is a comin’,

Yes We Can has arrived,

America is living,

All its people are alive.

It’s great to be an American,

Especially today,

To each and every one of you,

Hip, Hip, Hip, Hooray!

‘Tis the UNITED States of America,

It’s us, not me, I, or thee,

‘Tis the land of opportunity,

Where all people are surely free.

Free to see their dreams come true,

In this our native land,

Strike up the red, white and blue,

And join our marching band.

So step forward each and every one of you,

For every man’s a king,

And sing praise from the highest mountain top,

Sing and sing and sing.

Yes We Can, Oh my America,

Land of the Free and Brave.

Yes We Can my America,

Say goodbye to the day of slaves.

A new dawn has arisen,

The sun shines bright upon our land,

Stand up Oh Beautiful America,

Yes We Can, every woman and every man.

Oh beautiful for spacious skies,

And amber waves of grains,

Yes We Can my America,

Thank you for taking away the pain.

Yes We Can my America,

From sea to shining sea,

Yes We Can my America,

Thanks to each and every one of thee.

BURTSVILLE CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA ON THIS WONDERFUL, HISTORIC DAY IN OUR NATION'S HISTORY.  MAY HIS JOURNEY CONTINUE TO BE BLEST WITH VICTORIES AND HIS DAYS FILLED WITH JOY.  IT IS A PROUD MOMENT FOR ALL AMERICANS TO SHARE.  MAY THE GOOD LORD BLESS HIM AND HIS LOVELY FAMILY AS THEY LEAD OUR NATION FORWARD TO BETTER DAYS AHEAD.

HAMDEN SPORTS CENTER IS THE PLACE TO BE

DAN BUSH SCORES HAT TRICK WITH CUSTOMER FRIENDLY SPORTS SHOP

Hamden Sports Center is tucked away on Upper Whitney Avenue in the Mt. Carmel section of town.  It is located across from People’s United Bank just past West Woods Road as you travel north on Route 10.   Dan Bush its’ owner opened his doors in 2005 and youth sports--especially hockey--has never been the same.

“This is a great location and I couldn’t be happier with the response we’ve gotten in Hamden,” said the youthful and energetic owner.  “Everyone has been so good to me.  We try to provide the best service in a personal and professional manner.  I love to see the kids—boys and girls—youth to college—come in so I can help them get the right equipment.”

                                                                                                                 Dan Bush behind the counter

Nestled at the base of the Sleeping Giant Mountain next to Meryl Henrici's hip clothing store, Flirt, Bush as he is called by the many players and parents that fraternize his establishment is the quintessential small store owner.

A Cheshire native, his dad Bob owns Cheshire Sports further up on Route 10.  Dan grew up in the business and played youth hockey and then high school and college hockey.  He sells all sorts of equipment and clothes and counts Quinnipiac University among his many clients.  He has hired many Hamden players--present and past--and is very helpful to parents and young players alike.

“I can’t say enough about Dan Bush,” gushed Bob Ugolik, father of Hamden High’s standout sophomore defense man, RJ.  “He’s always smiling, great to the kids, helpful to the parents and a fine role model for all these kids to emulate. If "Cheers" were a sports store,” he said referring to the famous TV Show, Hamden Sports is it.  It’s The Place to Be”.

Dan helps young hockey star size up a stick

Next time you need something related to hockey, lacrosse or other sports please pass the chain stores by and stop in and see Dan.  You can get your skates sharpened, a new blade or shaft for your stick, stick cut and any size and style of equipment that you need.  Want to buy your favorite team shirt?  Just see Dan or one of his helpful employees.  His store is like a Lays Potato Chip.  You can't just go there once.  Your first visit will begin a friendship from the moment you are greeted by Dan or his staff that will last an athletic lifetime and beyond.

Gloves, Hats,Bags & Shirts                                                  Sticks Galore                                                           Skates and Fittings

Specialty item?  Just see Dan.  Why just this week young Johnny Battick, a star on the Pee Wee Team was in there with his dad, Canine Officer and Youth Hockey Administrator, John Battick.  Young John needed to get an extra special helmet.  He  had suffered a freak injury just before the Christmas Holidays crashing  head first into the boards.  He just received clearance to play again.  So, off to Hamden Sports Center and Dan Bush to get what is needed.

John Battick and son John at Hamden Sports Center

And you never know who you may run into at the Hamden Sports Center.  Last week former Hamden great, Pat MacGregor, who now attends and plays for Avon Old Farms, was in there sharpening skates or cutting sticks for many of his teammates from last year's Hamden team.

Pat MacGregor sharpens skates for Jim Burt as Dan Bush supervises the operation

Allie Aloi, the stylish dressed Hamden High School Team Manager also works in the store. He has been named Employee of the Month seventeen times this year alone.

Allie Aloi Employee of the Month

And, if you want to buy something nice for the Mrs. when you are there just take a left out of the door and stop in and see Meryl at Flirt.   She will help you pick out an outfit or some fine jewelry and you'll still leave with your wallet in tack.  And if you’re a hockey mom, you can leave your kids in the safety of Mr. Bush’s store and mosey next door to take a quick peek at Meryl’s beautiful clothes.

                          COYOTES CONTEMPLATE MOVE TO HAMDEN

The Rumor Mill

By Edward J. Brachocki, West Coast Report for BurtsVille

Recently the Arizona Republic ran a story about the future of the Phoenix Coyotes, which we have excerpted below. Our correspondent in Arizona did some additional digging and gives us some shocking revelations!

“Some media types in Canada - many who would probably like to see the Original Six stay put and every other franchise move north of the border - have been working themselves into a frenzy about the Coyotes.

They seem convinced that the Coyotes are about to pull up stakes any day now.

Speculation the past few weeks has been unending, from reporters, columnists, talk-show hosts and recently departed NHL general managers. The franchise does have serious problems to address: finding ways to ride out the blow of losing tens of millions of dollars in recent years; figuring out how it can engage in the fight every so often for superstar free agents; and, most of all, learning how to become a perennial playoff contender. All that revolves around luring fans.

Chairman and CEO Jeff Shumway wants to accomplish that in Arizona: "Hockey will be a great sport in Phoenix and Glendale, probably way beyond my years."

The latest rumors though: The NHL is encouraging the Coyotes to relocate to HAMDEN!

Not true, Shumway says.

"A lot of this is coming from out of state, and out of the country," he said. "Rumors are rumors. People have their own agendas. We clearly have admitted that this franchise has substantial losses, and that needs to be fixed."

Insiders though contradict the CEO. Colin McQuillan ex-Zamboni executive who is very close to ownership told us in an exclusive interview that hockey executives have been seen coming and going at a prestigious law firm on Whitney Avenue in Hamden recently. The article in the Phoenix paper, while not confirming the rumor about a possible move to Hamden, did note that “the NHL is helping the team look for investors, but this is not groundbreaking. The league did the same thing in recent years in Pittsburgh, Ottawa and Nashville.”

Shumway said fans do not need to be overly concerned about the situation, but changes are needed.

"It's a difficult economic market right now," he said. "Obviously, we don't have any control over that, but all of us need the economy to turn around. We've tried to address some fundamental issues with how we do business."  Of course, no one ever will confuse Phoenix for a real hockey town such as Detroit, (or Hamden?) but Shumway is optimistic. "I think everybody is coming to the realization that there's going to have to be more of a partnership and we've had discussions along those lines, and hopefully we'll be able to reach a resolution that works for both the city  and the team." But which city? “Stay tuned,” McQuillan added, “what they love about Hamden is the home grown talent base. Where else are they going to find that?”

Where indeed.

Hamden officials when reached for comment were incredulous. “This can’t possibly be true. There aren’t any prestigious law firms on Whitney Avenue in Hamden.”

                          HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!!!!!

12-24-08

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS FOR THE GREEN AND GOLD DRAGONS

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town,

The team was a skating working towards a crown.

The Hamden Hockey Team has started its quest once again,

To win the State Championship, a familiar refrain.

School is let out but practice we will,

In hopes that St. Nicholas will grace our proud hockey mill.

Throw the pucks on the ice and lace up those skates,

And back up your teammates, they are your best mates.

Look out of your windows tonite when it’s late,

Cause Santa and his reindeer always keep their date.

If you hear them a coming, keep low to the pane,

He’ll be on a sleigh, not on a plane.

The moon will be glowing with the new fallen snow,

Just keep your eyes open, your head keep real low.

Soon you’ll be seeing the Green and Gold wave,

Wheeler and Teulings defending,

And  Anthony Avitable making another save.

Pierne on his blades and Vakos behind,

Will lead Mr. Carignan, the Dragons will shine.

Amarone and Zukufnt together again,

Each of them waiting, ready to join in.

Morgan with his hustle,

Fracasso with his speed,

You want some fast action,

Findley fills your need.

Sorrentino, Ugolik and Cusano will guard the back line,

Young Amarone and Dadio together with Sullivan will shine.

Burt with his hustle and Berezecky with his hits,

Will keep Mr. McGovern from hitting the pits.

Walsh is a coming harder than most,

Castaldi and Coughlin to good health here’s a toast.

So, look for the scoring from MacGregor and more,

Gemmel’s a firing from the blue line it soars.

So to Billy, George and Todd,

Jersey and Allie Aloi,

The teams in your hands,

Merry Christmas with joy.

Have fun and enjoy the boys,

A challenge no doubt,

But give them a pat not nearly a shout.

And you’ll find them all climbing to the top of the hill,

We’re along for the ride, oh what a thrill.

And tonight each and everyone look to the sky,

Cause Santa is coming and that ain’t no lie.

So, away with his reindeer, beyond Cannon Ball Park on your right,

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA COMES TO HAMDEN

Wreaths Across America Convoy

The Wreaths of America came through Hamden this  week.  A caravan of vehicles led by a police escort drove by as many people came out of their offices to watch.  Horns honked, flags waved and simplest of parades reminds one of what are armed forces have done for us and are doing for us 24/7.  So, despite the present economic downturn lets all take time especially during this holiday season to say a prayer for all those who are serving our country.  And for those of you who have served our country.  Thank you and may God protect you and save you all from harm and bring you back to your family and loved ones soon.

One never knows when a medical emergency may crop up.  Looks like one did just last week when a Connecticut Transit Bus stopped on Whitney Avenue between NABA Cruise Consultants and Rainbow Cleaners.  The Hamden Fire Department Rescue Squad and Engine were there in a jiffy to assist.  No word on what transpired but an AMR ambulance was on the scene as well.

FOOTBALL TEAM EXPLODES ON SCENE

Jason Lassiter Huddles up the Green Dragon Machine

Congratulations to the Hamden High School Football Team on a fabulous season.  What a turn around.  The team won one game the year before and came within one TD of going to the State Championship Game.  Kudos to new coach Scott Benoit, his staff, the High School Athletic Department and the entire Hamden Football players, families and greater Hamden football community.  Many of the corp players of this team were on the Midget Football Team from Hamden that just a few years ago made it  the national football championship game.  Many of these players will be back next year so the team should be one of the team's favored to win the States.
